German Politicians plan to add Creationism to Biology Class

Politicans in Germany, more specifically in Hessen where I live, want to [add the biblical story about the creation of the world to biology class](http://www.welt.de/politik/article999798/Schoepfungsgeschichte_im_Biologieunterricht.html) (Link in German). At first glance their intentions are dressed up to look innocent or even productive: They are not trying to present Creationism as a competition to evolution, but rather that the biblical creation story “complements” evolution as an “allegorical explanation”.

Of course it’s easy to read between the lines, and the opposition has successfully done so: They criticize that the proposing politician (Karin Wolff) noted “strong analogies” between evolutionary theory and creationism. They also warned that the constitution of Hessen guarantees the freedom of religion, which includes the right for parents to excempt their children from religion class. Biology, on the other hand, is a mandatory class.

The attempt by Mrs. Wolff to establish religion in a science class can only be considered to be the first attempt to bring the “debate” over Intelligent Design to Germany. I put “debate” in quotes, because there really is no debate: Intelligent Design is religious, pseudo-scientific humbug and not a valid scientific theory. The “debate” only exists because Christian fundamentalists are trying to turn the USA into a religious nation.

We must guard against this in Germany, and in all of Europe: We must not allow the fundamentalists to start this unproductive campaign here. We must end this nonsense before it can take root. Therefore, I call upon Mrs. Wolff to immediately resign from her post.

Freedom? Can't have that

A lot of people make such a fuss about freedom. Freedom to do whatever they please. But seriously, now, for a moment, have you ever considered what the consequences of freedom are? If you allow people to do as they please, law, order, and civilization will break down. Chaos and anarchy will invariably follow, and people will do all kinds of natsy, evil, and utterly immoral things.

Take Malaysia, for example. A good, modern nation. Quiet, civilized, and you never hear a bad thing about them. But now a tremendous scandal is rocking their peaceful nation: A [satirical image](http://www.tianchua.net/en/2007/07/02/french-dinner-for-3/) of the deputy prime minister has been published on the Internet. We cannot have that, and Education Minister Hishammuddin Hussein [quickly pointed out](http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/6283056.stm) why this would set a very dangerous precedent if left unpunished:

>Education Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said that if people are allowed to make fun of Malaysia’s leaders they would use the same freedoms to insult the Prophet Muhammad as, he said, is done in the West.

And we can’t have that now – if people start to criticize religion and begin to think for themselves then all that is good and holy and pure would break down. Clearly, the Malaysians, the Muslims, no, the entirety of mankind must be saved from this dangerous path! Of course, Mr. Hussein put his foot where his mouth is, and was himself criticized for this statement. Not, as you might hope because freedom of speech is sacred, but because the Prophet is sacred and mere humans aren’t:

>Mr Hishammuddin stressed that he was not trying to put Malaysia’s leaders on the same level as the Prophet.
>
>However senior members of the conservative Islamic party, PAS, said that by linking the two, he had in effect done just that.

So that just proved again that freedom of speech will always be used to insult the Prophet Mohammad. It would probably best just to forbid people from speaking altogether, lest they commit heresy.

Democracy is officially dead

>Germany, which holds the rotating EU presidency, has aimed to put core elements of the aborted 2005 EU constitution at heart of a new agreement.

So the [BBC](http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/6769043.stm) reports.

I remember quite vividly that the EU constitution was rejected in several referendums. It’s nice to know that those democratic votes were worth nothing, and that our rulers will now force the garbage down our throats afterall.

Why go vote anymore? We live in a virtual dictatorship anyway.

Organs as Game-Show Prize

I have really been worried about the trends that currently take us into a very dark future, and now mankind has stooped to a new low. A Dutch television station is planning to host a game show, in which the [contestants compete for kidneys](http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/6699847.stm) donated by a terminally ill woman. The donor will decide who gets the kidneys based on interviews with friends and family of the prospective recipients, and on their background history. Viewers will be able to submit suggestions as well.

Needless to say, I consider this completely unethical. Organs should never be for sale; and in a way, that is what’s happening here. There should never be any other considerations than medical ones – who needs them the most urgently, who is the best biological match for the transplant, and so on. All human lives have the same “value”, and it should not be up to a game-show, or any kind of competition between recipients to influence this decision.

Of course the next step is that organs will be offered as prizes in regular game shows. Imagine a “Wheel of Fortune” in which solving the puzzle gets you a new lung. And now let’s take this idea even further: Battle it out like the roman gladiators did, and the winner gets to take it all – all the loser’s organs, that is.

No, really. I find the idea of a game-show for organs to be just disgusting.

#### Update, 2007-06-10 ####

Turns out [the whole thing was a hoax](http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/6714063.stm). Effective, yet tasteless. I guess in the end it says a lot about how deep I believe humans will sink in their search for profits.

Messing with Nature

The BBC has an article about [alien crabs invading Norway](http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/4775155.stm). The giant red king crabs were introduced to the Russian Barents Sea near the border with Norway in 1960; and since they have no natural enemies in the region they’ve spread wide and far. Norway’s fishermen are calling for increased quotas to fish the crabs, something that doesn’t sound like it would hurt at first glance.

However, the point of the story is that if you mess with nature you’re going to have unintended consequences. Do it very, very carefully.

9/11

_A few random thoughts, one year after the dramatic terror attacks of New York and Washington._

It’s been one year since terrorists crashed four american jets – one into the Pentagon, one into a field, and two into the World Trade Center. On that day, more than three thousand people died – and the world changed.

At least, one year later, it still seems different. Naturally, things have calmed down a little, but the Americans are still war-mongering, countries all over the world use the terrorist label as an excuse for anything they want, and the events surrounding 9/11 and the Anthrax attacks have not been fully explained.

I still remember that day, I was on the way to Tokyo for my well-deserved vacation. When I arrived, my ex-girlfriend greeted me with the words "They blew up the World Trade Center". I had trouble to believe that the Twin Towers were gone. It was really incredible. Something that happens in a movie, or a Tom Clancy novel. Right from the moment I saw the photos it was clear to me that this would be one of these events still talked about decades later; something that made the world a more dangerous place. As the chinese would say, interesting times have begun. We’ll all hope that nothing worse will happen. That the war against terror will succeed and terrorist organizations find no refugee anymore. But of course, I know that this is a dream that is unlikely to come true. One of Nils’ Laws of Life is that things always get worse. After the horror of chemical warfare in WW1, we had WW2 with all the concentration camps, fire bombs, and the climax of two cities destroyed by nuclear weapons.

We’re in a lull of events right now. These periods have existed throughout the history of mankind, and always have they ended in times of chaos and violence; facism and war. I hope that I am wrong, but I don’t really see it. The USA will attack Iraq sooner or later, and the Mid East will flare up. And some day, someone will get their hands on a nuke and take out Manhatten entirely.

I hope there is a way to avoid this; but it doesn’t seem likely. You can’t un-do nuclear technology. The only way to avoid it would be for the USA to become less hated. Is this possible? I seriously doubt it. What would be needed is a big change in mindset for both Americans AND their enemies.

I’ll buy some skis and wait in Hell for it to freeze over, first.
