Bolanle

Those amongst you who are a little more observant than others might already have noticed that someone else snuck into my “blogroll” style links in the sidebar: My good friend [Bolanle](http://www.bolanle.net).

I’ve known Bolanle for several years. Unfortunately, I never had the chance to meet her. She’s had a web page for a long time – at s5.com – but there was just so much advertisement on that site I decided to set up a weblog for her. Right now, there’s not too much there – I did copy some of the content over, but Bolanle will have to clean things up herself.

Anyway, head over [there](http://www.bolanle.net) and tell her “Hi”, I am sure she’ll be happy to hear from y’all.

Updated Theme

As you can see, I have updated the [Green Rhodes Theme](http://geek.pandemonium.de/wordpress/wordpress-themes/green-rhodes/) on this site. I have cleaned it up considerably. It’s not yet done… but it’s much closer to something that I’d dare release to the public.

It’s not quite feature complete yet, but if you find anything that is an obvious bug, please post a comment or contact me directly.

Having a Website

Mh. Why do people think that simply because I have a public website, I must agree to give every random stranger “equal airtime”? Build your own website if you want to publish your opinions, do not expect me to let you hijack mine to further your racist, fascist, or otherwise misguided and clueless agenda. _Especially_ if you are too much a coward to provide a working email address and/or your real name.

Freedom of the press belongs to those who own one, and this one is mine and nobody else’s.

Travel Website

I have launched another website…

* [GeekTravel](http://www.geektravel.info) is a focused travelogue / travel weblog in which I will post about general travel topics and relate my travel experiences as I make them. As the name of the weblog implies, it’ll have a geeky touch – after all, it’s me we are talking about here. Also, expect pretty pictures.

As with the [other offspring](/2005/11/05/my-websites/) the idea is to provide a more focused website for another section of my old weblog. Enjoy.

Rediscovering Blogtree & Blogshares

I have rediscovered [Blogtree](http://www.blogtree.com). Blogtree is an old service which tries to create a “family tree” of weblogs. Of course this is utterly impossible considering the explosion of the number of weblogs in recent years. But if you feel like you can [trace your blog's origins], you should consider to sign up for their site and add your weblogs. I think it’s a pretty nifty, and I have just [added all my new sites](http://www.blogtree.com/blogtree.php?blogid=543) to the blogtree. (Lars, Martin, you have new weblogs that may be added, and could probably recruit more people ;-) .

I’m also adding all my sites to [Blogshares](http://www.blogshares.com). Not that I really play that game anymore – although they seem to have cleaned up the game considerably since I gave it a try. Still, maybe some of you will find it entertaining. The idea is definitely not bad.

My Websites

One of the reasons why I redesigned my homepage was that my old weblog was too unfocussed. It was a true “amateur” weblog in that it included a million posts on as many subjects. With this update, I am fixing that design flaw. Instead of one confused weblog I am now going to run several focussed, specialized weblogs.

The weblog you are reading, “The World According to Nils”, will remain my “private” weblog – a “life diary”, if you so want to call it. It will in the future focus much more on what I am up to, what I am doing and planning.

The other weblogs that sprang up from my old site are:

* [Pandemonium.de Weblog](http://www.pandemonium.de) – A weblog about all the things happening on my servers. If I add a new site, or some existing site has something to announce, or if my servers experience problems or maintennance windows, that weblog is the place to check for things. Interesting probably only to friends and fans.
* [Geek World](http://geek.pandemonium.de) – A site about all things geek. It’ll feature technology, gadgets, sciences, and other things that let my geek heart beat faster.
* [Auswandern](http://auswandern.pandemonium.de) – As the name says, this weblog explores the options and requirements for people who whish to leave Germany and move to another country. No, I do not intend to do it. It’s more of an exercise in research and logistics than anything else… but it never hurts to have a “Plan B”, right? Of course, as the target audience is Germans, the _Auswandern_ weblog is being written in the German language.
* [Underdark Adventures](http://UnderdarkAdventures.com) is a weblog about Arjan and my Neverwinter Nights module and server. Updates, player discussion, and so on are featured at this website.

There are a few more weblogs in the pipeline – a travel website, for example. Stay tuned for more news here or over at [Pandemonium.de](http://www.pandemonium.de).

Hello again, world!

Hello people!

Almost four years after I first implemented a weblog on this site, and maybe 1.5 years after I switched to Textpattern, I have no made the move to a new weblog software: WordPress.

There were many reasons for the switch, but the main reason was that WordPress is easier to customize and seems to be much better supported than Textpattern. Textpattern isn’t bad software, mind you, it’s just that after using it for a while and trying out wordpress, I like the later much better. Sorry, Dean, I do feel a bit bad for dumping WordPress and Textpattern.

So, what’s new? Well, at first glance you will see I have completely revamped the look and feel of the website. You’ll quickly notice that some feature aren’t back yet – most centrally, the photo albums. Also, most of the old stuff is gone – I’ll slowly port over the old articles.

There are a whole bunch of new features. The whole comments thing has been streamlined. You can subscribe to feeds not only of the main site, but also to comments of an individual article if you are so inclined. It’s now much easier for me to add photos to articles, too, so expect me to post more illustrated articles.

We also support trackbacks now. If you link to this weblog – or in fact any of my weblogs – make sure you ping me for a nice trackback entry. And spammers need not even try; it’s all moderated.

So sit back and enjoy, “The World According to Nils”.

Statistics for this Website

[This website](http://nils.jeppe.de/) has existed for almost ten years, incredible as it may seem. The URL was not too stable over the first three years, but since around September 1998 it was accessible under http://nils.jeppe.de. Unfortunately, I only have continuous statistics for the past 3 years (and no backups of old versions, though whether this is a bad thing is open to debate). Still, those are pretty nifty and impressive and all and I am proud to share them with y’all. Not that they really serve any purpose other than to demonstrate just how much the internet has grown in the past 3 years…

At any rate, here we go.

The first graphic, above, shows the daily average of each month of the past 3 years. “Hits” and “Files” increased greatly once I published my photo albums. The drop in June 2004 is due to my restrictions on remote linking. I can’t really explain the drop in averages this spring – it’d be very interesting to find out what caused this.

The second graphic, above, charts the monthly page views of this website. Again note the “drop off” between February and May. It looks like we’re back on track, however. I wonder when I will hit 100k pageviews for the first time.

Note: “MT” stands for Monthly; “DA” stands for Daily Average (just in case you didn’t figure this easy bit out). The graphs I created with “OpenOffice.org”:http://www.openoffice.org.

eBay Oddities

After my successful purchase of a Cisco router (yum yum it works) I have been browsing eBay a little bit. Didn’t find anything too interesting yet. And it’s not like I really need more stuff anyway…. but there may be a few items that I didn’t buy in the past due to their high price, that conceivably could be more reasonably priced in today’s second hand market.

I do notice a few odd things about eBay. I mean all of these existed many years ago, when I used eBay more regularily. Still, it amazes me that people are trying to sell – for example – used Apple iBook G4′s for up to 1300 Euros, when Apple sells one brand new for 980 €. Haha, the suckers who buy that…

What didn’t exist some years ago was an EU law that forces sellers to give up to a year of warranty for used goods. A commendable law, it can be disclaimed by private citizens selling things. Which is totally okay in my eyes. But not only do some obviously professional sellers disclaim any warranties; does anybody really think I will pay more than, say, 25 Euros for ANY device if the seller says in the auction description he would not take it back in any case?

I mean – at least give me the promise that you will refund me if the device is defective or breaks down in a few weeks!

Well, I will probably pay a bit more attention to some keywords in the near future, who knows what else I may come across.

Comments

I’m enabling comments for good. The layout still sucks, I know. Unfortunately a lot of it is hardcoded into [Textpattern](http://textpattern.com). Use your newfound powers wisely. Oh, I _will_ censor abusive comments.
